FAQ
Arboriculture is the science and practice of cultivating, managing and studying individual trees, shrubs and other woody plants. It requires a diverse range of skills, expert knowledge about various species and the ability to work at height.
Whilst there are no formal qualifications needed to become a tree surgeon, a period of training and certification to work at height (with machinery or independently) is generally required. Studies in forestry and horticulture are certainly beneficial.
We certainly can! Tree surgeons can work in the rain and are equipped with all the necessary PPE to do so.
The dormant season, which typically falls between late autumn and early spring (roughly November to early March), is usually the best time to prune.
However, there are some exceptions for certain fruit trees, which are prone to a disease called Silver Leaf, so are best pruned in spring/summer when spores are not being carried by the wind.
Signs like discolouration or wilting leaves, dead or brittle branches, and fungal growth or rot can all indicate disease. By acting quickly, we can remove areas of the tree before it compromises its overall health.
Tree roots can be invasive and infiltrate drainage systems as well as damage property. Root pruning may be necessary – speak to us if you have any concerns.
Some tree removal may require permits, particularly for protected trees, so it’s always best to check with your local authority.
Trees can occasionally cause problems, especially if structurally compromised, but a tree surgeon can easily assess the situation.
Costs vary based on the tree and the site, with no standard hourly or minimum charge.
Trees are vulnerable in storm weather, but regular maintenance and pruning can help minimise damage.
We advise you to speak to your neighbour directly before attempting to cut back a problem tree. You may be able to prune or remove branches on your side of the property, as long as the health of the tree is not compromised.
British Standard 3998 is a standard for tree work that emphasises the importance of respecting trees as living organisms.
